Palmetto Health Children's Hospital is a state of the art facility located in Columbia, South Carolina. We are the only free standing ch! ildren's hospital in the state. Between our inpatient areas consisting of 78 general pediatric medicine beds, 18 pediatric intensive care beds, and 67 neonatal intensive care beds, and our outpatient areas, we serve nearly 82,000 children each year. Our specialty areas of care include critical care, neonatology, infectious disease, oncology, nephrology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, neurology, surgery, nutrition, endocrinology, and emergency services.
Children's Hospital has a dedicated inpatient pharmacy with a staff consisting of fifteen pediatric pharmacists and seventeen pharmacy technicians and students. Our pharmacists round with the PICU, NICU, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, and general pediatric services. We also provide services to our Children's Hospital Outpatient Clinic, pediatric hematology/oncology clinic, children's day hospital, pediatric sedation suite and pediatric emergency department.
The PGY2 residency in pediatrics at Palmetto Health! Children's Hospital is designed to transition PGY1 residency ! graduates from general practitioner to one in a specialized practice that meets the needs of pediatric patients. PGY2 residency graduates exit equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary pediatric care team, able to make complex medication recommendations in this patient populatuion. Training focuses on developing the resident with the capabilities to understand a wide range of diseases and disorders that occur in patients from the neonatal period to adolescents.
Graduates of the pediatric residency are experienced in short-term research in pediatric pharmacy and excel in their ability to teach other health professionals and those in training to be health professionals. They also acquire the experience necessary to exercise leadership for pediatric pharmacy practice in the health system.
